Hello Virginia.Your James Adolphus Muse is a bit of a mystery. He's on the 1880 census of McLennon Co TX, Dist 117, page 229B, as "J. MUSE, age 18, Laborer, born TX" and enumerated in the household of a J.W. Burwell. There were no entries for the POB of his father & mother.
He's next found on the 1900 census of Mitchell Co TX, ED 115 Sheet 11, as JAMES A MUSE, age 38, born Jan/Jun? 1862 TX with wife Eva, age 31, b Feb 1869 TX, and daughter Annie G, age 5, b Apr 1895 TX.
However, I couldn't find him anywhere in TX in 1870,when he'd have been about 8 years old. I did find his future wife, on the 1880 census of Cherokee Co TX, listed as Sarah E. Grimes, age 16,born 1864 TX. She was dau of Ben F Grimes (b GA) & his wife Mary J, (b AL).
I wonder if James A was born elsewhere & just THOUGHT he was born in TX? Have you found him on any census after 1900? His death certificate might name his parents.
I'm intrigued because there were MUSES in Cherokee Co TX by 1850, and "Adolphus" was a MUSE family name.I suspect that your James Adolphus is connected to that branch of the family. If you have any other clues I'll be glad to try to help further. You're the first person who's ever asked about this individual & it would be nice if we could identify his parents.
