That their deaths are not noted in the SSDI is one reason why I suspected a spelling shift; but, as I understand it, the SSDI was not instituted until 1980. There are deaths before 1980 recorded, but I suspect not many before, say, 1965. I trick I use is that, if you go to the 'census' segment of the Family Search databases, you can enter just a forename with an approximate birth-date. This is useful when a surname has been badly mangled. Especially if a good location is available. Using 'Vetal' also generates 'Vital' For example, Vetal Morran in Frenchville, Aroostook Co., ME in 1880, b. ca. 1870, s/o Phillip and Tallie Morran. 'Morran' may be a misspelling, the Irish 'Moran' (and some Irish surnames became Acadian by marriages in the early 1800's), or a variation of a French name (Morand?) The spelling is terrible, and I suspect one son, 'Alsemn' is actually Anselme. 'Dennie' probably should be 'Denis'.
It is the apparent absence of a 'Vetal Murray' that also makes me suspect a spelling shift in the surname.
One can also search for just a surname as well.
