LAST CONFEDERATE IN CAROLINAS
ARNOLD MURRAY [ above ] is the last surviving Confederate veteran in the Carolinas. He will be 105 years old June 10. The lone veteran lives with his son, LEE MURRAY, on a farm near Orangeburg, S.C. He was in training near Charleston when the War Between the States ended and never took part in any shooting. North Carolina's last Confederate veteran, SAM BENNETT, 100 years old, died March 8 at his mountain home in Yancey County near Asheville. [ AP photo]
