Hello Neil
First I want to tell you that what you found on the Soundex should be given a second thought:
I went to U. D. Murray and looked up the1880 Census and want to tell you now that the origional document was written quite clearly and it was W. D. so the person who typed the document made a mistake.
No doubt Eugene was called Jena by his family as a nickname.
On the 1880 USFC it states origional copy hand written:
W.D. Murray
home in1880: LImestone, Buncombe, North Carolina,
age 42 estimated date of birth 1838 in North Carolina. Father and mother both born in No. Carolina, occupation farmer, married, white , male.
Members of the household:
W.D. Murray age 42
Mary Murray age 36
Emma Murray age 15
Marion Murray age 13
Walter Murray age 11
Ben Murray age 9
Robert Murray age 7
Jena Murray age 5
Hattie Murray age 3
May Murray age 1
I do not understand why you would want to get away from the 1880 data....
When doing genealogy as I have for over 40 years you learn NOT to dicard information until you have proven it wrong.
I hope that this eases your mind a bit.And wish you continued succes in your research.
Sara
