Christopher, the info re the Murrays in Ithaca was indeed from one of your earlier postings; I had never seen this reference before. How did you trace them to NY?
Sarah's given name was Sarah Murray Byrd Childress/Childers. Her father is thought to be a John Childers but we are not certain. My aunt tells me that Sarah's grandfather was "James Murray of Athol, near Petersburg." Sarah supposedly was named for her two grandmothers, which we took to mean that either her maternal or her paternal grandmother was a Murray. I believe that her mother's given name may also have been Sarah. Anyway, she married John Caughlan, probably in 1823/1824 near Lynchburg, VA, and they had five children that we know of. The family shows up in St. Louis, MO, in the 1840s and supposedly moved there about 1835. My branch then crossed the river to IL.
John Caughlan was an Irish immigrant and (we believe) a teacher.
Hope some of this is helpful.
Susan Caughlan
