Hello Tom!
I have always wondered if Edmond's murder might have been the first in the long line of trouble between the Hatfields and the McCoys.Mainly because of the location and the families involved. Thank you for sharing that info from the reunion!Would love to know more...
To answer your questions, Edmond and Susannah Clevenger were married in Pike Co., KY in 1823, where they appear to live until 1830. He is in the Logan Co. VA (now WV) census in 1830. I suspect that Gabriel (1825), Alexander (1827) and Mary (1830)were born in Pike Co. and Lucinda (1832)and William (1838) were born in Logan Co.
Mary's marriage record indicates that she was born in Pike Co. in 1830.The family must have moved to Logan Co. shortly after her birth.I suspect that there were more children--these are the ones that I have been able to find so far.Just stumbled upon Mary a few weeks ago...
Edmond's parents were Gabriel Murphey Jr. and Clarissa Herndon of Russell Co. VA. The Murpheys and the Herndons were originally from the Culpeper/Caroline Co. area of VA, and migrated to Caswell NC in 1777. Shortly after the turn of the century, the Murpheys migrated to Claiborne Co. TN.After the death of Gabriel Sr. in 1808, Gabriel Jr. relocated his family to the Russell Co. area.He died there in 1818. Some of the family members appear to move to Pike Co.KY then to Logan, VA (WV). Some seem to directly relocate in Logan.
After the death of Susannah, Alexander and Gabriel move with their siblings, wives and young children to Pike Co.Family legend has it that they returned to Pike Co. because the Clevengers were willing to help raise the remaining children. And it is possible that Edmond may have taken one or two with him to Tazewell Co. where he relocated and married Polly Shortridge.
The children from the second marriage are much easier to locate and document.
I am fascinated with this story--any light you can shed on the life and times of Edmond Murphy is greatly appreciated!
