Who is Edmond/Edward Simpson that married a Beard?
Rev. War Pension application states he was born Sept. 6, 1765 in Wilkes County, NC and he produced a record of his birth to the court.Enlisted in service in Wilkes County. After war went to Georgia for a couple years with his father then to Union County, SC.He is not in any 1790 census I can find online.May be in Georgia.
1800 census of Union County SC shows:
Edmond Simpson (would be 35 here)
1 male 26-44 (b. 1756 – 1774)
1 female 26-44 (b. 1756-1774)
2 females 10-15 (b. 1785-1790)
3 males 0-9 (b. 1791-1800)
There is listed for Union County census a John and Samuel Simpson, too.
According to what I have seen online, Edmond/Edward Simpson married Zilpha Murphy who are born 1774.It is not very likely that, if this is she in the census, she was born 1774 and married at age 11 to have had children by 1785.Even pushing this forward that would mean she would have had her first child in 1789 at age 15.Possible but still very young.
1810 census shows Edmond Simpson but this census is too faded to read.

Edmund/Edward Simpson’s will is probated in Union District, SC Sept. 26, 1835.His will names no wife.He four youngest children named are:Samuel, William, Polly Campbell and Edmond, Jr. (in that order) and his son Bird Simpson’s two oldest sons to receive $50 each.Samuel Simpson, Executor. It further states he is to be buried at the family graveyard. Also, given in the will are Negroes Eliza and child to James Campbell, Sary Ann to Edmond, Kandal/Randal? to William and Mary to Samuel. The largest purchaser of the estate inventory was William Simpson.
Edmond Simpson, Jr. dies shortly after and his estate is appraised on March 22, 1836.Jason Norman is appointed his guardian. No will and it states he is a minor.A guardianship bond is issued on Jason Norman, Samuel Simpson and Jesse Dodd on 9/26/1835 (since this is the date his father’s estate was recorded, maybe this paper goes with his father’s estate).Estate is very small but 1 negro girl Sarahan is appraised for $500 and inventory sold 12/5/1836.This is what is on the paper:
Wm Simpson l girl Sarah Ann and )$625
James Campbell --------------------- )
These two men are buying one slave?
James Campbell was Administrator of the estate with Letter of Administration issued 2/27/1836.An Administration bond was issued on James Campbell, William Simpson and Asa Dodd.
Elenor Beard’s will was recorded in Union District March 21, 1823 names Edmund Simpson as her son-in-law.No mention of his wife.Other heirs in her will are sons-in-law David McGummery (this is probably Montgomery) James Martin and John Mares (he gets land near Newberry on Duncan’s Creek), Eleanor Cockram daughter and wife of Jacob, eldest son John Beard, Wm Beard son, Ann Pearson wife of Samuel and Patience Landrum wife of Micaijah, grandchildren James H. Harris and Mariah Harris children of Sarah Mares.Someone has put on the message boards that Sarah Beard married James Mayes. It is written several times in this will that the name is Mares.
Something does not make sense with the census records and this will.If Zilpha Murphy died in 1809 then she is not the mother of Edmond/Edward Simpson, Jr. who dies in 1836.If he is under age 21 in 1836 or 1835 then he was born 1814 or after.Edmond/Edward Simpson, Sr. would have been 44 in 1809 when Zilpha died and it is likely he remarried. It could be that Edward Simpson in 1820 census with all the family is a son of a brother of Edward, Sr. and this is the one who went to Tennessee?Edward Simpson, Sr. would not have had two sons named Edward, right? Also, the 1830 censusshows Edward, Sr. (assuming he is the head of household) with a male 15-20.This male could have been a minor in 1835 but not 1836 (under 21).It makes more sense that the Edward Simpson with 2 males and 1 female in 1820 is the one who went to Tennessee, but it is not likely he is the son of Edward, Sr.
My interest in this family is that my gggrandfather is William Simpson born 1812-1814 and according to one of his son’s death certificate was born in Union County, SC.There are no Edward or Edmond names in my line and the dates of birth of Edward’s sons are close but a few years off.
Can anyone explain this?
