From the census record below, we can see that Gains was married to Martha and had at least 5 children. That his parents were both born in GA, which gives you a clue. And with him being born ca. 1824, in Alabama, you know his parents moved from Ga to Al by that time. Now what you need to do is look at Murphrees in GA in the early 1800's. There were a few over there, but the name wasn't always spelled as Murphree, so you have to look at different spellings. The family may have known how to spell the name but the enumerator may not known how, and spelled it however he heard it. With all the children being daughters may make it a little harder to track this line, I saw Jessie and immediately thought he might be connected to one of the Jesse Murphrees, then saw Jessie was a female, but that may still be a clue. 1880 United States Federal Census about Gains Murphree Name: Gains Murphree Home in 1880: Mount Willing, Lowndes, Alabama Age: 56 Estimated birth year: abt 1824 Birthplace: Alabama Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head) Spouse's name: Matha Father's birthplace: Georgia Mother's birthplace: Georgia Occupation: Farmer Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Name Age Gains Murphree 56 Matha Murphree 45 Nancy Murphree 16 Rosa Murphree 14 Jessie Murphree 11 India Murphree 10 Pearl Murphree 2 Notify Administrator about this message?
