Has ANYONE heard this story - Father of Issac Martin & James Hare Murphey
Posted by: Greg Murphy (ID *****2864) Date: January 01, 2012 at 16:33:57

My GG-Grandfather, James Hare Murphy b.1815 and his brother Isaac Martin Murphy b.1808 migrated from Virginia to Rush County, Indiana around 1830. They married Evans sisters, Isaac married Mary and James H married Elizabeth. Both families migrated to Marion County, Indiana and settled in Lawrence twp. After Elizabeth's death in 1846, James married Mahala Wilson (my line) and moved to Buck Creek twp. in Hancock County (borders Marion Co). Isaac & Mary moved one twp north to Warren twp.

After much searching (years), I cannot find out who their father was. Their mother's name was Mary, she lives with James and Mahala in the 1850 Hancock County, IN census.

Recently, I connected with another descendant in Fairfax, VA. He inherited some things belonging to a great grandaughter of Issac, including the following story written in his Bible.

According to the story, Isaac and James father as a young boy, was on an Irish ship with his mother enroute to America. There was a shipwreck at sea and the mother tied her little boy to a piece of luggage so he would survive. The mother did perish however, the little boy was rescued. Sadly, he was too little to tell them his name! Consequently, they gave him the name Murphey, spelled with an "e".

I would so appreciate anyone responding that has heard this story OR has any suggestions for me!
Kind Regards,
Greg Murphy (Indiana)
