Mr. Caver:
Regarding this part of your post:
"MURPH, John:
Deed transfer from the estate of John MURPH. The transaction mentions a Margaret Sightter(?) as a daughter of John MURPH who had filed a petition in the court of common pleas (1842) against Frederick MURPH and Elizabeth GEIGER for not selling lands of John MURPH. The court ordered the lands sold, and in January, 1843 William L. Miller , sheriff for Lexington District, sold the land to David WANNAMAKER. The deed also mentions that these 700 acres of John MURPH lay adjoining the estate lands of Robert SEAWRIGHT, CAVER, and others on Beaver Creek on the Lexington-Orangburg district lines.
Source: Lexington County, SC DEEDS, Book “N”, pg. 35-37."
Andreas thought this was John Murph who fought at Cowpens and married Elizabeth Kaigler.A similar petition that I found:
"South-Carolina Temperance Advocate Issue of May 26, 1842 page 202;Marriages & Deaths, Columbia, SC Newspapers, 1838-1860, p.202 State of South Carolina.
“In the Court of Ordinary, Lexington District. Margaret Sightler, applicant, vs Frederick Murph, and Elizabeth Geiger, Deft's. Real Estate of John Murph, deceased. It appeared that Frederick Murph, one of the defendants, resides out of the limits of this State… A. H. Fort, Ordinary of Lexington District, April 4th, 1842”
Note that it does say Frederick Murph "resides out of the limits of the State".There is a Frederick Murph who went to Tenn. (1820, 1830, 1840 TN censuses).
Margaret Sightler is the wife of Henry Sitler/Sightler of Lexington Co.Andreas noted this also, but I don't think he got the connection with John Murph of Cowpens and Elizabeth Kaigler. The gravestone of Margaret Sitler has "daughter of...John and Ann E. Murff...I assume she was Ann Elizabeth Kaigler Murff.
Elizabeth Murff Geiger was married to John Randolph Geiger of early Orangeburg.
Andreas noted another child, John Murff of Lexington who died 1842.
Hope this helps,
Jan Murff Melton
