Thought this might be interesting/helpful to someone here. This is a quote from the Revolutionary War Pension Records of my ancestor, James Greenfield:
"In the fore part of the year 1780 he again enlisted into the guard upon Long Island Sound as a substitute for John Murdock who went a privateering."
