Sister Therese Marguerite Murdock

WORCESTER-- Sister Therese Marguerite Murdock, 102, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, a longtime leader in her religious community, died Sunday, June 24, in Notre Dame Long Term Care Center.

She leaves nieces and nephews. She was born in Charlestown, daughter of William J. and Mary E. (Coughlin) Murdock. She lived in Ipswich for 20 years, before moving to Worcester in 1996. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in the Fenway section of Boston.

Sister Murdock worked for the investment firm of Kidder & Peabody, before entering the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1919. She was international treasurer for the Sisters of Notre Dame at their general offices in Rome, where she served her religious community from 1968 through 1976. From 1937 through 1946, she was a principal of the St. Julie Billiart School in Rome. At the onset of World War II, she was given the option to return to the United States, but chose to remain in Italy, where her school buildings served as shelter for hundreds of victims of the war and her school was also damaged by air bombing raids. She later returned to the same school from 1953 through 1961. She was also the director of the Colli a Volturno, a special home located south of Rome, from 1961 through 1968. She was also a former principal of Notre Dame Academy, Boston; St. Charles School, Woburn; and St. John School, Peabody.

A Mass will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are from 3 to 5:30 p.m Tuesday, June 26, in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund, 340 Plantation St., Worcester, MA 01604.
