By changing my search to James E Murdoch, I have found the book for which I was searching here: http://tiny.cc/JamesEMurdock2

In the preface, it gives the names of Murdoch's two sons, Thomas Forrest Murdoch and James E Murdoch (the older son). It doesn't call him a Jr. Later it calls his father Lieutenant Thomas Murdoch, a resident of Philadelphia (p.43) and says he led a volunteer battery in the War of 1812.

Elsewhere in a NY Times article from 1893 giving his obituary, it says he was tended to the last two years of his life by his daughters, Miss Fanny and Miss Ida.

Hope this information is of use to those of you researching the family.

Best regards,
Duchess Martin
