Trailing the Mumme's from Pennsylvania to Ohio
My thanks to my mother, Lucile Marshall, for all her work in tracking down this Mumme information.
The first Mumme found in Pennsylvania is Samuel Mummy (Pennsylvania Archives, volume 24, 3rd series). Samuel bought 150 acres of land on 6 June 1738 in Buck Co. Pennsylvania.
His children (listed with Eva as the mother)
*Anna Margaret b. 1 Jan. 1741, baptized 21 March 1741, Lehigh County (which was Northampton). Sponsor: Heinrich Acker Church: Jordan Lutheran Church in Lehigh
*Maria b. 1 Oct. 1747, baptized 8 Nov 1847 St. Michael's Lutheran Germantown Church, Pennsylvania
*Susanna Cathrina b. 10 June 1749, baptized 16 July 1749, sponsor: Johannes Mekendorfer & wife Dorothea
*Johannes b. 5 March 1751, baptized 31 March 1751 (father listed as Samuel Mammoe and wife, Eva). Sponsor same as Susanna
*Henrich, baptized 2 Oct 1752, Father Samuel Mamoe, wife Eva. Sponsor Henrich Aker & wife
*Johann Thomas 7 Dec. 1757, Father Samuel Mammoe and wife Eva
*Jacob (prob. son of Samuel, too) listed in St. Paul's Lehigh township, Poplar Grove church records. Born in Germantown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Died in 1815. Aged 77 years. Served 2 years in the revolution, Ensign 2nd Company. B. 1738.
*George (poss. son of Samuel) born in Germantown abt. 1740. Revolutionary War soldier. Married 28 Aug 1760 to Eve Elizabeth Thiel or Deil.
Samuel was in Philadelphia in 1769 (3rd Series of National Archives, page 95) Samuel later went on to Northumberland.
George, the Revolutionary War soldier, was in Philadelphia (3rd Series), in Germantown in 1774. In the 5th Series of the National Archives, George Mummy is a private in the Continental Line, Berks Co. On 28 April, 1790, He is in the 1st Battalion, Berks Co. Militia. He was also a Private in Northampton. In 1781 George Mummy was in Longswamp, Berks County Pennsylvania. (Pennsylvania Archives). On 9 December 1793, he bought land in Berks County Pennsylvania. He settled in Greenwich, next to Lehigh.
From the Berks Co. Albany Township Rosenthal New Bethel (or Corner Church) records:
John & Christine Mumme's children:
*Anna Maria b. 1 Oct. 1781 Sponsor: Henry Nerhud
*John George b. 4 August 1783 Sponsor: John George Schwenck
George Schwenck & wife had a son named John George born 20 July 1785 and the sponsor was George Mummy and wife.
Jacob & Catherine Muhmy had a son, Michael, born 31 March 1792 and the sponsor is Christine Schwenck.
In Albany township tax list, 1784, John Mume is listed. He's also listed there in 1785, along with Adam Reichelderfer.
In 1790 in Northumberland County (Beaver township) census:
John Mummy has:
1 Male 16 & up, 2 males under 16, 4 females.
Also on that list is Henry Nerhut and he is next to Adam Reichelderfer.
In the 1800 census, Northumberland, Beaver Township:
John Mume has:
1 male 0-9, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45+
1 female 0-9, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 45+.
In the 1820 Stoutsville Ohio census, George Mumme, who is married to Barbara, is in the Clearcreek Township, Fairfield Ohio census, and he lived by Peter Wolf my ancestor who married Barbara Mumy, George's sister. (That's 2 different Barbara's - the Barbara (?) married to George Mumme and Barbara Mumy who married Peter Wolf)
In 1830 Fairfield, Clearcreek census, George is dead and his wife Barbara is on the census, listed as having:
1 male 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20
1 female 5-10, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50. She is living close to John Mumy Sr., who lives with his wife and both are in the 70-80 age group. John Mumy Jr. also lives nearby with 2 males 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 20-30. Also living closeby were my ancestors, Peter Wolf who was married to Barbara Mumy.
There is a Jacob Mummy in Washington Township, Pickaway ohio, who is probably John Sr.'s son. This Jacob was married to Magdelena Brunner.
The Godparents tie the Lehigh Northampton Mumme's to the Germantown Mumme's.
IThere have been queries re: George Mumme of Ohio's father (md to Barbara) , and judging from census info., his father would be John born in 1751 in Germantown.
Hope this is clear,
Charissa
