Two Stephens:
1. Stephen b. c. 1789, son of George Mullis b. 1768, per
George's Will filed--but not probated--1n Surry Co., 1833.
Another son in the Will was John, b. c. 1790, so Stephen was evidently born earlier: the date 1789. This Stephen lived in Surry and moved in 1830s, yet living 1850.
2. A younger Stephen Mullis of the same area: Wilkes/Iredell/Surry, m. Mary Ann Wysong and died young, leaving sons Wiley and Wm.Morgan Mullis who accompanied remarried mother Mary Ann Wysong Myers to Walker Co., Ga.
No record of this Stephens parents.I suspect father was George's younger brother, Ambrose b. 1771, seemingly the only other male resident in the area, and Stephen was a traditional family name dating back to Lancaster Co., Va. All of Sarah Mullis' children named sons George and Stephen; Ambrose and sister Sarah Mullis Hendren both named sons Richard--elder sister Cora Mullis Campbell did not, had only one son, John Campbell. Thus, the Wilkes Co. Mullis family born in the Revolutionary War era continued the given name pattern established by first Mullis immigrant, John (1658 Va.)by naming sons Stephen, John, George and Richard. In that regard they were the only Mullis family in North Carolina to do so; the Anson Co. family did not pass on given name pattern-tradition.
