Searching for root name & meanings

i'm reaching the root,origin and coat of arms of the sur-name. not many mullings are in new providence -bahamas, a few in inagua - bahamas. when in scotland, i was informed that it came from the mulligan/mullins clan, i do not know how true, but i've not been able to trace it so far. any links to this would be helpful.
