Mullikin Family Genealogy Forum

Welcome to the Mullikin/ken/cans. There are many ways of spelling it, and there are several different lines that came to America at different times. Some came from Ireland, but most were originally in Scotland. If you look at the messages on Genforum for the "Regarde Bien" newsletter, it gives a lot of background.
My family also thought they were probably Irish, but it seems now that they probably were from Scotland. It is difficult because most of the Mullicans/kins came to American before 1700. Some others came to Boston or other spots; people from most of the lines ended up in KY at one time or another. I personally am not familiar with your Mullikins, but there were a bunch who had settled around Fleming and Nicholas Co, I believe, and that they came relatively early into KY -- prior to 1810, I think. They were from the Maryland lines, which are probably the most numerous of the ones who spell the name with a "kin".
Do beware of spellings -- unless it is your birth father's actual signature, it is a name which is spelled many ways by others. Most of the families appeared to have stabilized their spellings by about 1920, but public records are often inconsistent even after then. I place more stock in the spelling if it is also consistent with the city or county, with given names, and sometimes with the same religion or occupation as the person I am looking for.
Best of luck to you.
