Hello Harvey,

I saw your posts to the Mulliken and Mullikin fora. From what I've seen on your Earthlink website, I can only congratulate you on the thorough and hard work you've done. Thanks for making it available to the rest of the kin.
I've been working off and on for years on a number of genealogy problems, and believe I have narrowed down the connection between the Mullikens and the Wheat family of Prince George's Co., MD. I am hoping that you have found some confirming information or documentation.
My line (with the one hypothesized link marked with an asterisk) is:

James Mulliken = Mary (Weylett) Damarel
James Mulliken = Jane Prather
James Mulliken = Charity Belt
James Mulliken = Mary Pottenger
* Mary Mulliken = John Wheat (1733 - )
Thomas Wheat = Mary Chatham
John Thos. Wheat = Selina Blair Patten
Selina P. Wheat = Dr. John Seay

The Mary Mulliken connection is from old Wheat family correspondence (basis for Charles Dufour's book, Gentle Tiger, on the life of Chatham Roberdeau Wheat). I have never found any documentation elsewhere of this marriage, short of various websites.

The two possible links I have seen, where a Mary Mulliken is identified in the 18th century in a correct time period, are:

1. Mary, daughter of William Mulliken
and Margaret Turner (William a
younger son of James Mulliken and
Jane Prather); and

2. Mary, daughter of James Mulliken and
Mary Pottenger, as shown above.
This was strictly hypothetical, until
I found reference (in Early Families
of Southern Maryland, Vol. 7, by
Elise G. Jourdan [Willow Bend Books,
Westminster, 1999], p. 44) to
the death of James Mullikin IV
(misidentified with his father by
the author) before 29 Nov 1749.
An account of the administration of
his estate by his widow Mary
Brashears, then wife of John
Brashears, on 30 Mar 1752 mentions
4 minor children, James, MARY,
Charity and Samuel. This informa-
tion and document were unknown to
Elizabeth Baker, author of The
Mullikins of Maryland.

The best evidence, which works with the later Mary Mulliken, is the fact that two of her children are James Mulliken Wheat and Mary Wheat (her other children bearing her husband's and mother-in-law's names, with others). Her probable birth date, ca. 1745, also works with the probable marriage date with John Wheat, the birth dates for their children (based upon the 1776 census data for the family).

I will look forward to checking in on your web site for further documentation. If there is anything you are aware of that relates to the above, please let me know. Also, if there might be information I have that might be of interest to you (incl. the Prather ancestry, or the descendants of John Wheat and Mary Mulliken), please let me know.
