John Mullens of Early Grainger County, Tennessee
I am researching the Archibald Mullens line of Grainger County, Tennessee, and would like any assistance you can give me in finding out who his parents were. Archibald was born in 1804 in North Carolina and at an early age, moved with his parents to Sullivan County, Tennessee, and then to Grainger County around 1818 when he was 14 years old. He lived in Grainger County the rest of his life, dying there in 1890. Supposedly, he has stated in family records that his father was a John Mullens who later moved from Grainger County to the Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia area where he raised more children. Apparently, Archibald and other siblings stayed in Grainger County. I am reminded that the post-Revolutionary War land grant of 200 acres in Sullivan County (then North Carolina) awarded to John "Revolutionary John" Mullens (and others, like Swift Flower Mullens of nearby Hawkins County, TN) may be the same ground that Archibald once lived on before moving to Tennessee.
I have entertained several scenarios that include John Mullens being the John "Chunky" Mullens (1772-1838) who possibly married: Martha "Patsy" Farmer (1771-1805), Lucy Bohannon (1787-1801), Elizabeth Mullens (the daughter of John Wesley "Revolutionary John" Mullens -- she was was born around 1773 and was married to John Mullens in April, 1820), Elizabeth B(artlett) Ellis (1787-1819), and Elizabeth Stanley (of which there is a Grainger County marriage record dated 1809). At the moment, I believe Archibald's parents were John "Chunky" Mullens and Elizabeth B. Ellis who were married in 1802. I am pretty sure that this John definitely married Lucy Bohannon, Elizabeth B. Ellis, and Elizabeth Mullens (Revolutionary John's daughter).
I am an early participant in the Family Tree DNA Project and my DNA analysis supports with reasonable certainty that Archibald (my 3rd great grandfather) descends from William Marshall Mullens III (1725-1791) and quite possibly from his son, William Varner "Coonie Bill" Mullens IV. If so, there is some ground upon which to suppose that Coonie Bill and Nancy Stanley's son, John "Chunky" Mullens, might have been in Tennessee and Georgia at some time during his life before returning to Kentucky where he died in February, 1838.
Can anyone give me additional information on John "Chunky" Mullens to help me determine if he is or is not Archibald's father? Many thanks.
DENNY.
