Scottish Mulherons

My great-grandfather's family came from Dumfries in Scotland. Everyone tells me Mulheron is an Irish name, yet I have no knowledge of any Irish link to the family. My great-grandfather was Alexander,b. 1829 with brothers John, b. 1826, Thomas, b. 1821 and James, b.1849 (could be cousin or son). As far as I know they came to Canada as grown men (at least in their 20's). They originally settled in Wellington County in Ontario, near Arthur but some later moved to Galt (present-day Cambridge). Alexander married Agnes Little, whose parents were Gabriel and Rebecca.
If anyone can confirm a Scottish connection to this name, please let me know.
