Mulcrone family tree
Hi, I am a Mulcrone and my family traces their history to a Charles Mulcrone and John Mulcrone.I have a very short history paper my dad (named John William Mulcrone Jr) prepared for me about 5 yrs. ago when I was in high school.Although it is not in depth - it may help you.It says John Mulcrone was born May 18, 1852 in the village of Newport- County Mayo.He was the 2nd son of Charles Mulcrone and Ann Chambers.Other children included Honore or Honora (1844-1896), wife of Patrick McCann; Michael F. (1849-1907) husband to Helen Wager; Charles (1855-1858), William (1857-1876) and Mary (1867-1938) wife of Lorenzo O. Holden.
Charles and Ann left Irleland shortly after John's birth and came to Mackinaw Island (I will add a note here - my family has a trunk at home that I understand was theirs when they traveled to the US by ship - the trunk is large and has a rounded top. This means they were well-to-do, allowing their trunck to ride on top of everyone else's) Anyway, they arrived in Mackinac 1853 - prior to their arrival they stayed in Montreal, Quebec and Cleveland Ohio - (there are still Mulcrone's from this family in Cleveland - can get in contact with them too)
John Mulcrone attended the distric schol on the island. About 1870, at 18, John left the island and started a 10 yr. career with the Government Lighthouse Service. His last 3 yrs were spent as the principal keeper of the Waugoshance Island Light - a lighthouse at the Lake Michigan entrance to the straights of Mackinac.
After leaving the lighthouse service, John joined his brother Michael in business. On July 1, 1888, a general store called Mulcrone Brothers began opperation with an inventory valued at $2,500.The business prospered and in 1895 their inventory had risen to $15,000.They sold dry goods and clothing, eventually the emphasis was on men's furnishings ( my family has a picture -in it isthis store, as well as a few others on the street and the caption in the picture says "Mulcrone Block" and it was printed in "Mulcrone's Bazaar")
After 21 yrs in the business, John and Michael were pioneers in Mackinac County. The Mulcrone Block - built along State St. across from the present state boat docks -was the first building erected in the county. The block included Mulcrone Hall - one of the social halls of St. Ignace.Mulcrone Hall was one of the first buildingsin St. Ignace to have electric lights.
In 1898 the brothers expanded the business for Mackinac Is with a men's funishings store. That store would eventually be run by Michael after the brothers disolved thier partnership in 1901.John continued in Business with an souvenir store called "Mulcrone's Bazaar".John also owned a men's furnihsings store between 1914 and 1918.
They also had extensive land holdings in the city of St. Ignace and Mackinac Is.They also owned and operated two ferry boars inthe straight of Mackinac area : the North Star and Columbia (The last time I was there for the family reunions - about 13 years ago, those ferry companies were still there and operating - Mulcrones still ride for free!)
I've actually been to one of their houses which is still there. It is a large beautiful white house. The relatives who own it are my grandfather's cousins - but they are still in the family tree - for example, I come from the John Mulcrone line and the relatives who own the house now must be from Michael's line. The house is amazing - like a museum with all the original floors, rugs, drapes, and most of the furnishings - no one lives there. There was also another house across the street from it that the rest of Charles' family lived in or grew up in.Although it has been torn down and became the electrical company, we have photos of it.
...back to the paper:John, like his brother Michael, was active in politics. He served on the board of education and the board of water and light. He served as president of both boards.John served as pres. of the city council from his elected position as city councilman from the second ward.HE wasa long term member of the democratic county central committee and served as committee chairman for 2 yrs. John also served 2 terms as Mayor of St. Ignce 1896m 1897 .( it is my understanding that another one of the Mulcrone's was mayor as well - I thought it was Charles jr.The resason for this is the place wewould gather for Mulcrone family reunions is at a house on a street called Charles Mulcrone St. The house is on land in Michigan known as Grant's Point. It is the MOST SOUTHERN TIP of upper Michigan.THe State has been after it for years to make a historical place, but the Mulcrone's hold fast )

(His father, Charles Mulcrone is buried on Mackinac Is. along with several others whom I can't remember - but my father would know)
