MUIRHEADS c. 1800
Alexander /(John)Muirheads
I have positive identification of my GreatGreat Grandfather Alexander Muirhead, who was born about 1809, married a Charlotte (Riton?) from Warwickshire, migrated to London, and died in 1854.His two sons (eldest Alexander) and John Riton Muirhead then went to India, fighting in the Abyssinian war en route.I heard that Alexander Muirhead (1809-1854) came from the Dumfries area, but after researches, and hearing that an ancester fought at Colloden and that we are entitled to wear the Colquhoun tartan, I think that these Muirheads came from further north (probably Lanarkshire). There are various Alexander and John Muirheads listed in the OPR records for the Glasgow/Lanark Parish. I understand that there was a split in the family (owing to Colloden?) and thenceforth my side of the Muirheads always called their eldest sons Alexander. The second sons usually John, etc. I would be most interested to hear if anyone has details of the (Alexander/John) Muirheads pre. 1800.
