MUIR's w fam history of cancer, SW Scotl
In trying to trace the Lanarkshire Muir family of a distant cousin who is working with me on another line, I learned of two lines, both from Ayrshire, that carry a tendency to cancer (one report) or brain cancer (the other report), majority w the latter dying in their 50's but some later. Also, my Ontario Muir from a series of towns immediately south of Hamilton in Lanarkshire says his father died at age 53 of brain cancer. In the latter case, every Muir in direct line of descent for four generations has died of brain cancer, three in their fifties and one at age 79. I have no further info, it is always possible that cancer from elsewhere spread to the brain. I can't find where the Muirs I am looking for are from but a small amount of evidence suggests possible ties to Ayrshire. The two lines I got reports from both originated in Ayrshire. Those families were migrating all over the three counties of Ayr, Renfrew and Lanark like crazy in the 18th and 19th centuries, and did a fair amount of travelling earlier. Also, the area extends to Dunbarton in a different county but only a few miles north of Paisley. The common link between these lines is most likely from before 1700.I want people to be aware to check for any family history of or deaths due to cancer (often it is necessary to get death certificates even of close relatives), and also to please contact me if your Muir family has such a history, since this is an important clue to what families are related to each other, and may identify the common roots of a number of families with this hard to trace name, and also I would like to be able to pinpoint where the gene came from and where it went. (Because of genetic disease in my own family, I have an interest in the subject.) I can also provide what info I have on the families with the gene. One of the reports contained a vague and I think not strictly correct lineage from Robert II of Scotland. My own research indicates he married a daughter of Sir Adam Mure of Ayrshire, who married a woman from Renfrewshire. All of this around 1300.Atleast some lines of this family contain alot of Andrew's and/or Adam's and are unusual among Muir families of the three counties in that respect.
