HI Kate I am looking at the copy's of birth and death extracts to see what else i can find,on margaret's death cert it says death occurred at 199 high st Ayr and this was on 2nd april 1861 ,the register was signed by james muir, but i am not so sure about that now as the two deaths below both have present written in the box mine doesn't,the death was registered at ayr by J.D.Reid.I don't know if this was a relation or not.margarets parents were john reid and sarah kinnon.margaret was 36 when she died so she must have been born abt 1825,I could not find a birth cert or death cert for james muir it is written as moore on his son James's mckinnon muir's birth cert on the birth cert and wedding it referres to james snr as james muir mason ,would that ( mason)have been his job perhaps t5hey married on 10/12/48,james mckinnon muir was born on 21/4/1849 and his birth was in Ayr he was baptised by rev cuthell, someone did a census search for me on rootschat and this is what came back.

1851 for Irvine - all b Irvine

Jane Jaffrey 40
George Jaffrey 10
Agnes Jaffrey 8
Mary Jaffrey 5
Robert Jaffrey 1
James Muir 1 nephew

1861 for Ayr - all b Ayr unless shown otherwise.

237 High St Ayr

John Reid 63
Sarah Reid 62 b Ireland
James Muir 38 brother in law - stone mason
James Muir 12 nephew
Jannett Muir 10 niece
John Muir 8 nephew
Agnes Reid 39 daughter
Thomas Rodger 63 boarder b Ireland
Sarah McFadden 3 niece b Culton Ayrshire

On Margaret's death Cert who does it say Margaret Reids parents were? Was it Sarah & John?

This is Sarah & John in 1851 living next door to James & Margaret.

235 High Street Ayr

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
REID John Head M M 51 Carter Wigtownshire - -
REID Sarah Wife M F 53 Ireland - -
REID Mary Dau U F 18 Seamstress Ayrshire - Ayr

I cannot understand how james would have been john and sarah reids brother-in-law and how the others were his nieces and nephews and not his children, margaret did die in 1961 of consumption.
do you think in the 1861 census james snr and junior moved in with margarets parents.

James m'kinnon muir was married to elizabeth mclelland from alba st st quivox on 22/11/1867 in Ayr,neither could sign their name as both have a + I believe this is called leaving yoour mark as the said people could not read nor write, elizabeth was the daughter of william mclelland and jane niven , on the marriage cert it has (dec) written for margaret.here is some more census background on the above family.

1901 census 36 main st campbeltown

elizabeth wife 46 born glasgow lanarkshire
malcolm son 19 carter born campbeltown
mary daug. 13 born campbeltown

and then to confuse things more
from the IGI
john mcphail muir born 12th march 1873 campbeltown argyll
parents james muir and elizabeth mclellan

james muir born 28th november 1870 ayr ayrshire
parents james muir and elizabeth mcclelland
