Hi Cheryl, Thomas Mudget or Muggett married Ann Gray the daughter of Capt. Francis Gray of Charles City Co. VA and his wife Grace. Grace may have been Grace Singleton whom Thomas Muggett imported over to VA. Francis Gray appears several times in the Charles City Co. Order Books between 1655-1666, a prominent man, Justice and a Burgess several times. On April 3, 1663 Francis Gray of Martin's Brandon leased 100 acres to THOMAS MUGGETT for 21 years and "if Thomas has issue by his wife, daughter of Capt. Francis Gray", the land is to become Mudgett's. (Order Book 1655-66, p. 381). Thus Ann Gray became the wife of Thomas Mudgett or Muggett. Thomas died in Surry Co. 1690. Ann Muggett's Will dated Sept. 4, 1689 and probated in Surry July 1, 1690 (Book 4, p. 144). Page 194 3 Sept. 1662, Book 1, Jury in Surry Co. VA: Allen Muggett, Jno. Mason, Geo. I am very much interested in sorting out notations regarding a Mary Muggett who is said to have married John Mason of Surry. Bolling Batte in his cards has two John Masons as one and shows John Mason married Mary Muggett, however, John Mason of Surry married Elizabeth Muggett. John and Elizabeth's daughter Ann Mason married Phillip Shelley. John Mason of Surry died before 1676 when Guardian Accounts are discussed in the Surry records for the children of John and Elizabeth Muggett Mason. Elizabeth next married Thomas Clay and thirdly John Shugars. I have documentation for these marriages and would gladly share. Just let me know. My questions would be: Was Thomas Mudget or Muggett married prior to his marriage to Ann Gray? I ask this because Ann Gray Muggett left to her granddaughter Ann Mason Shelley, however, the Surry records note that Francis Gray left the land to Thomas Muggett April 3, 1663 if Thomas and Ann had heirs. Yet, Ann Gray Muggett died between the writing of her will Sept. 4, 1689 and the will having been probated in Surry July 1, 1690, yet she had a granddaughter in this timeframe who was already married? Not impossible but I would think extremely rare! This is why I have wondered if Elizabeth Muggett was by Thomas and a first wife? Secondly, do you have in your records a Mary Muggett? The John Mason I am researching was of Nansemond Co. VA. I have wondered if his wife was named Mary. So far no documents have noted the wife's name. It would be rare to have two Muggett ladies marrying two John Masons, however, there is a problem with Batte's notations. Could be that Mary who married the John Mason I'm researching bore a different surname. I have two other Mason men whom Batte also confused as he did not realize there were more than one Henry and William Mason just as this with John Mason. If you have any thoughts I surely would appreciate your help. Carolyn Notify Administrator about this message?
