A biography of Colonel Simon Hauswirth, Butte, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 831. Simon was born, 16 Dec 1844, son of Rudolph and Catherine (Romang) Hauswirth. The family came to America in 1855, bringing their family of eight children and settling in Milwaukee, where the father was a farmer. In Wisconsin, Simon attended school in the winter and worked on the farm in summer. On 7 Dec 1863, he enlisted in the Thirty-fifth Wisconsin Infantry. He was two weeks in training in St. Louis, went to Baton Rouge, Duvall's Block, Little Rock, Arkansas, New Orleans, was in the siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely on Mobile Bay, and after the surrender of Lee's army, he was sent with other troops to the Mexican border at Brownsville, TX. He was mustered out at Brownsville, 15 Mar 1866, and granted an honorable discharge at Madison, WI. On 31 May 1868, Col. Hauswirth married Mary Deck, born near Waukesha, WI, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Deck. In May 1870, Col. Hauswirth came to Stewart, MT, then located to Butte, MT, in May 1875. Children: John R. (Hamilton, MT); Emma (died in East Orange, NJ), Mary (Mrs. William Rickey); Albert, Louisa (died at age 2), Charles A. (Butte, MT) Col. Hauswirth resided in Butte where he was elected alderman, was chosen city marshall in 1884, and in 1886 was elected city treasurer. He also served as deputy sheriff.
