A biography of John P. Hinchilwood is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 797 & 798.

John was born, 16 Sep 1840, son of Archibald and Margaret (O'Keefe) Hinchilwood. Margaret died when John was a child. In 1861, at age 21, John enlisted in the Union Army as a member of Company D, 93 Volunteer Indiana Infantry. He was sent to Memphis and then to Vicksburg, later to Nashville, then Mobile, AL. He received his discharge in Memphis, TN, 12 Aug 1865, and returned home to Indiana. John then moved to Minnesota where for 21 years he was a civil and surveying engineer, principally employed by the Northern Pacific Railway Company, and as such came to Montana. Finding a job that suited him in Plains, MT, he left the railroad and became a resident of Sanders County, where for over 20 years he was engaged in surveying. After retiring, he made his home in Hot Springs, MT. A niece of Mr. Hinchilwood, Miss Bertha Morrison, a native of Iowa, and daughter of Benjamin and Jeanette (Owen) Morrison, was in charge of his household.

In the 1850 Census, the family was living at Ellsworth, Mahoning Co., OH.
In the 1910 Federal Census, John P. was living in Jocko, Sanders Co., MT, age 69, Occupation: Manufacturer of lumber.
In the 1920 Federal Census, John P. Hinchelwood, age 79, was living in Hot Springs, MT, with niece and nephew, Bertha and John Morrison. Occupation: Civil Engineer

John Hinchelwood died 20 Feb 1930, age 89, Flathead County, MT.
