Just found your post! According to the book "Names on the Face of Montana," by Roberta Carkeek Cheney, PHILLIPS was in Phillips County near the town of Malta. It was named for B. D. Phillips, a big cattle owner whose rance was hear here. The post office was established in 1896 with Benjamin Phillips as postmaster. It was closed in 1914-19 and then open until 1947.

Hope this helps you a little bit. I have never been in that part of the state, so I can't be of much help.
