I was recently given a bundle of old Christmas cards that a cousin of mine sent me which pertain to my direct line of Sampson's. These are cards that my GGgrandfather, Charles Melvin Sampson, and his wife, Josephine (Houle) Sampson, sent to various relatives in Maine and Wisconsin. One interesting thing that I noted was that the postmark from the years of about 1930-1934 were all sent from Missoula, Montana. I had never heard of any of my Sampson family members living in Montana, so this was a surprise to me.
Charles Melvin Sampson was born on 14 Feb 1852 in Dexter, Penobscot Co., Maine and he died on 15 Feb 1933 in Sturgeon Bay, Door Co., Wisconsin. Charles Sampson ws a son of Darius and Nancy (Stockbridge) Sampson. Charles Sampson married Josephine Houle on 1 Sep 1881 in Sturgeon Bay, Door Co., Wisconsin and they had 4 children, all of whom were also born in Wisconsin. Both Charles and Josephine Sampson lived and worked in Wisconsin throughout their lives, and they both ultimately died and are buried there. I was operating under the impression that they never left Wisconsin. This is why it was particularly unusual for me to see their Christmas cards for about 5 years in a row (maybe more, but I only have those spanning a 5 year period) were sent from Missoula, MT. No Sampson relatives that I know of were in Missoula at the time, and Josephine (Houle) Sampson's family was all in Wisconsin as well.
I thought that perhaps Charles and Josephine Sampson had a wintertime vacation home of some sort in Missoula, MT however Christmas time would be a rather odd time of year to travel to Montana for vacationing in this early day of the 1930's.
So my question is, does anyone have any record of any Sampson individuals in the Missoula, Montana area in the 1930's that could give me some insight as to why my GGgrandparents were there, or what brought them to Montana in the first place? They would have been quite old during this timeframe; Charles Sampson died in 1933 from a heart attack at the age of 81. Josephin (Houle) Sampson died at the home of her sister in Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1953 at the age of 91. They were too old by this point to have had any children in Missoula, and all of their children were grown by this point anyway. (And none of them were living in Montana).
Anyone who may have some more information for me on this or who could help me solve this unusual puzzle I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks and take care,
