From the book, "Names on the Face of Montana: The Story of Montana's Place Names," by Roberta Carkeek Cheney, first published in 1983:

"LOMA (Chouteau County) is northeast of Fort Benton where the Marias River joins the Missouri. Lewis and Clark camped here on June 3, 1805, and named the smaller river after Capt. Lewis's cousin, Maria Wood. In 1831 Fort Piegan, a trading post, was established here by James Kipp of the American Fur Company. A year later the post was abandoned, burned by the Indians, and replaced by Fort McKenzie. Ferryboat service was available for many years at Loma. The post office opened in 1911 with Robert Lee as postmaster. The Great Northern station there was called Chappell."

So, perhaps Dr. Turner and his family were able to utilize the ferry to cross the river. In those days, quite often both post offices and schools were located in farm or ranch homes, as traveling to a town was either too far or too difficult.

Go to your Google search window and enter: "University of Montana Mansfield Library Digital Collection." Then scroll down to "Montana History," and under this category, click on "Progressive Men of Montana," then click on "Name," then click on "T" and then scroll down to TURNER, William P. Jr. You will find a very nice biography of this William P. Turner who came to Montana and homesteaded in Chouteau County.

I hope the above info helps!
