Fleury indian family
Hi,
My name is Vernon Barlow and I'm doing research for my grandson who decsends from Antoine Fleury born 1829 per the 1920 census of Fergus Co, montana. They immigrated to the US from Canada in 1878 per the 1920 census. I'm tlaking to 2 indian women from Fort Belknap and have given me what they havebut they don't have enough. Can you share with me anything on the Fleury's?
My grandson's gr gr grandfather Albert Gouley went to the Chemawa Indian School, in Salem, Marion Co, Oregon. He went there with 2 cousins Willie (William) Fleury and John Fleury. John's father took the three of them to the school from Montana in 1917 and enrolled them. I have their records from the National Archives from Seattle. Albert Gouley mother was Isabelle Fleury who marriedNapolian (the french name) Paul (english name) in 1894 they had one child that died and then Albert in 1900. Soon after he was born Paul, his father, was killed in a fight. From then on I can't find Issabelle who married later a Collins. I'm not really sure how they married back then but one of the indian women told me most marriages were arranged and the groom was usually older then the bride. Did they keep the married name or go back to the maiden name, I'm not sure. Someone, A Fleury, in Canada married a Cree, Assiniboine, Chipawa or Gross Vetre and gave them english names. Has anyone got a web site that can be researched or someone from Canada do research. I'm sure the indians didn't take a census so how will anyone reseach the Indians past the 1850 census?
Anyway does any of this ring a bell?
Thank for any help you might give
Vern
