F. D. Richard family 1876 massacre & Sioux capture of daughters.
My great uncle, Fred "Lonestar" Hans, wrote a book titled "The Great Sioux Nation", his daughter, Montana Helena (Hans) Weyer, wrote a novel titled "Trailing the Teepees". Fred's granddaughter, Grace Lakota (Hans) Pawol had published by the So. Dakota Historical Society, a booklet titled "Scouting for the U. S. Army, 1876-1879: The Diary of Fred M. Hans". Many newspaper articles have also been published about Fred Hans and his career and i have a few but i don't have any way to find others. The books, letters and articles that have been written by Fred Hans or about him, mention many names, places, and historical events. I am wanting to find verification (if possible) of his exploits or correlation in other books or articles.
Sincerely grateful for any 1876/1877 records or newspaper articles or followup for Bertha Richard in Chicago or elsewhere ?
Does anyone know any details of their capture, how and when was Bertha and her sister, Mary, found
Dan
A copy below of a heirloom letter from Fred Hans to his cousin--
"I found my brother and 17 white women captives returning all to their surviving friends.
You, living in North Dakota may be near the place, near head waters of Hart River and close to a station. On the Northern Pacific R.R. called Richard, where F. D. Richard and his 3 sons Jenny, Mark and William were slain by a Sioux War party in July 1876 and the two girls, Mary and Bertha were carried into captivity and held among the wild Sioux on Powder River, Montana Territory one year and twelve days before being rescued by myself on the thirty-first day of July 1877.Of these two girls, Bertha is still living, now at Chicago, Ill.
