Extracted from the book "Names on the Face of Montana: The Story of Montana's Place Names," by Roberta Carkeek Cheney; copyright 1983; Revised 1984; Seventh Printing June, 2000; published by the Mountain Press Publishing Company of Missoula, Montana: NEWLON (Richland County) was a station on the Northern Pacific near Sidney named for a pioneer, William W. Newlon, who was also the first postmaster when the office opened in 1881. It closed in 1901 but was active again 1902-13. The area around here was called Newlon Flats." In 1975, the Richland County Bicentennial Committee published a book titled "Courage Enough, I" which contains hundreds of family histories of the pioneers in this area. There is a story about the history of the settlement of Newlon on page 794; a bio about Robert "Bob" Newlon on page 976; a bio about Lewis Ellery and Clementine Newlon on page 440, and a brief bio about Mrs. Sarah A. Newlon on page 976, which states that she was born in Illinois on September 16, 1847. Since you have kept your e-mail address hidden, it is not possible to send you a transcription of these stories. However, you can order this wonderful book by contacting the Mon-Dak Heritage Center located in Sidney, Richland County, Montana.
