Montana settlements c. 1863

I really need some help in plotting on a modern map the known/major settlements in MT c. 1863. Given the fact that there were few white settlers in MT Territory in 1863, and given the ever present threat of Indian attack, I would tend to think that the settlers would have been clustered near or around the forts or military camps or along major rivers.
If anyone has any special insight into this problem, please drop me a line. I'm trying to trace the movements of a Henry Cone or Otto Henry Cone, who was allegedly married in MT in 1863 to one Elvah/Alvah Johnson.
Thanks,
Larry
