Mike, Your guess with regard to the Indians being Sioux may be correct. I had not put it together before, but elsewhere in the Montana Post I mentioned before is an article about a Mr. Courtright in company with a Col. Smith, D. Shrike, J. Donnelly and M. Boyer who were attacked by what the article calls "Platte Sioux" about three weeks prior to the incident I first mentioned. This attack occurred at a place described as "at the junction of the Bozeman and the Bridger lines," (meaning roads I think) which would appear to be right along the route taken later by the "doomed" men.
I suppose what is meant by Platte Sioux are those Sioux that live along the Platte River.
