Route of doomed men killed by Indians - geographic help
I am requesting help in tracking the route of three men, only one of whom survived an Indian attack. The following is from the Montana Post, 24 June 1865. I would appreciate it if someone could locate the route described here and I realize that some place names may have changed.
"On Sunday last, Young S. Hughes was brought into town (Virginia City) having been shot through the left wrist...Hughes (had) left Gallatin (is this now Bozeman?) on the 1st of June with A. J. Noble...and James Campbell, intending to prospect for quartz on the Rosebud - a river between the Bighorn and the Yellowstone. They crossed the ferry on the Yellowstone, leading to Emigrant Gulch, on the 3rd (where would this ferry be?) and the range shortly after (what is the range?,)camping about nine miles from the Yellowstone (why aren't they following the Yellowstone to get to the Rosebud - why are they nine miles from it?). About 10 am on the morning of the 4th, they were surrounded by a body of Indians, nearly 500 in number, who were lying in wait for them. At first they pretended friendship, until they had them entirely corralled, holding up their hands and shouting "How do?" When the party were(sic) completely hemmed in, the savages opened fire with arrows, rifles and revolvers." The story goes on to relate that Noble and Campbell were killed right away, but that Hughs took refuge on the banks of Boulder Creek amongst some brush, holding off the Indians until (story continues) "Hughes, about 12 pm, having discovered a beaver path under the brush, crept through to the creek, on his hands. He waded downstream till he struck the Yellowstone...pushing on, he came at last, about 4 am, to the crossing (I presume this is where the party originally crossed on their way to the Rosebud), where he saw some men who kindly took him in charge and carried him to Yellowstone City, Emigrant Gulch. Dr. Hull dressed his wounds...Mr. Hull brought him to Virginia as soon as he was fit to travel."
Questions: can anyone suggest the route taken, the possible ambush site? Which tribe of Indians were the attackers likely from? What route would a party take if they were going from "Gallatin" to the Rosebud? Is the Boulder Creek, referred to, the Boulder River at Big Timber? Thanks in advance.
