A biography/family history of George P. Leinenweber, Alder, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 716 & 717. George P. was born, 11 Oct 1869, fourth of nine children of Mathias and Helen (Smith) Leinenweber, whose ancestors came from Germany and settled in Indiana in pioneer days. Children of Mathias and Helen Leinenweber: Rose (Mrs. Joseph Speltz, Indianapolis, IN); Lizzie (Mrs. Frank Wolf, Madison Co., IN); John (IL); Matthew (Madison Co.); George P. (Alder, MT); Frank (came to Montana as a miner, died at Boulder, MT, age 28); William (Indianapolis, IN); Maggie (Mrs. Andrew Burke, Madison Co.); Ella (a Sister of Charity). George P. was educated in the rural schools of Madison county, IN. He assisted his father at home,learned the carpenter trade, and left home at age 21. He came to Missoula, MT, in 1891, where he remained for one year as a carpenter and builder. He spent the following year doing extensive building in Boulder, MT, and continued the same at Virginia City, MT. In 1891, he located to Alder, MT, and established a large general store. He invested in property and buildings in the city and vicinity and owned all the land between his store and the river. In 1897, Virginia City, MT, George married Miss May Gilbert, daughter of Henry S. and Margaret Gilbert. Henry S. Gilbert was a pioneer of Madison county, MT, and was a prominent brewer in Virginia City, MT. Children of George and May Leinenweber: Orlando and Gilbert. I am not related.
