MONTANA DEATH INDEX 1954-2002: WOLSTEIN, Ann Victoria Died: 14 Apr 2001 at 92 years of age County(s) of Death & Residence: Silver Bow County Father: VIMPANY, Henry Mother: _______, Hannah Marital Status: Widowed Certificate #: 2565 --------------- Extracted from the "Helena Independent Record," published at Helena, Montana on April 17, 2001, online edition: ANN WOLSTEIN... Lifelong Helena resident, Ann Wolstein died April 14, 2001, in the Butte Convalescent Center where she had resided for the last six years. Fittingly, she passed away on the 18th anniversary of her beloved husband Martin’s death. Ann Victoria Vimpany was born on May 8, 1908, in Helena to Henry and Hannah Wolstein (Anderson) Vimpany. She was the youngest and only girl of five children. Ann attended the Deaconess Boarding School in the Helena Valley through the fifth grade. She finished her grammar school education at the Bryant school. Her ambition was to become a country schoolteacher. In the summer of 1924, at age 16, she met Martin Wolstein while both worked at Phillip’s Dairy. They were married May 12, 1926. Their love lasted 57 years. Ann and Martin’s early married life was spent doing many different jobs. Her most memorable was the three years they spent working for the family of Dr. and Mrs. Lanstrom. They lived in an apartment in the beautiful Lanstrom mansion on Helena’s west side. In 1930, they began searching for land to call their own. They found 160 acres available on the county road near the top of the hill 12 miles north of Helena. They built an 18-foot by 18-foot one-room home and a rough lumber chicken house. Thus began the Wolstein Mountain View Poultry Farm. Their three sons were born in the midst of the Great Depression. Times were tough, but between chickens, eggs and Ann’s beautiful garden, there was always plenty to eat. During World War II meat was rationed and chicken was in great demand. Having 6,000 chickens at once wasn’t unusual for them. Many people in Helena still remember the old Homestead as "Chicken Hill." Ann took in a few bum lambs and soon began to build quite a sheep herd. For 11 years, Ann ran the concession stand at the Gates of the Mountains. She was working there when the devastating Mann Gulch Fire was burning. She remembered packing hundreds of lunches each day for the firefighters. Ann’s older grandchildren have fond memories of gathering, grading, candling and packing eggs. They then headed into town to sell eggs and Ann’s baked goods with Grampa "Boodle." In 1960, Ann and Martin were told that their farm would not be granted an access to the new Interstate 15. They would have to abandon their home of 32 years. They traded land with the Sieben Ranch and moved their buildings, animals and every flower bush and shrub to the north Helena Valley. For the next 11 years Ann cooked at the Mountain View Girl’s school. She retired from there at age 66 and for the next four years cooked at the Masonic Home and the Cooney Home part-time. "Nana" will be remembered for her love of family, animals, fantastic cooking and her wonderful stories. We have all spent hours spellbound by her wonderful tales of days gone by. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Benjamin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan and Joyce, Sherwood and Ada, Dick and Merle; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Dorothy Wolstein, sons, Martin and Robert Wolstein, grandchildren, Karen and Reed Wolstein; and great granddaughter, Amy Wolstein. She is survived by her son, Richard of Helena; daughters-in-law, Rita Wolstein of Helena and Joan Wolstein of Butte; nieces and nephews and their spouses, Ed and Mary Lou Wolstein, Janie and Kenneth Hohn, Rusty and Vonnie Vimpany and Betty Jenkins; grandchildren and their spouses, Steve and Connie, Greg and Elaine, Sherwood and Mary, Paul and Jeanne, Mike and Bobbie, Cid, Carla and Mike, Wayne and Karen, Trent and Abby, Marla and Wayne, Roxanne and David and Michelle. She had 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Ann’s remains have been cremated. A memorial service has been planned for Wednesday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home in Helena with interment to follow at Forestvale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Little Red School House or the Shrine Hospital for Children. Retz Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. --------------- I hope you find the above information useful. I am not related to, nor do I have any personal knowledge of the above-named families.
