ARTHUR B. SUMMERS, 74, WORLD WAR VETERAN, DIES AT HELENA FORT

Arthur B. Summers, 74, of Poplar, veteran officer of World War I, died this morning at Fort Harrison veterans' hospital, where he had been a patient since June 10.

Mr. Summers was born Nov. 7, 1870, in Alexandria, Ind. He enlisted in the army Nov. 11, 1916, and served as a second lieutenant until his discharge on Jan. 20, 1919.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Louise M. Summers of Poplar; six sons and daughters, Mrs. Charlotte McCannel of Harlem, Maxine Summers of Helena, Peer Summers of Poplar; Frederick W. Summers, who is serving in the army; A.B. Summers, Jr., who is in the marines, and James C. Summers, also in the service; five brothers, T.V. Summers and C.C. Summers of Anderson, Ind., D.O. Summers and D.D. Summers of Florida and C.D. Summers of Detroit, and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Moore of Elwood Ind., and Mrs. Cleo Whistner of Anderson, Ind.

The body will be forwarded to Poplar this afternoon by the Opp and Conrad mortuary.

So, it appears that Arthur B. Summers died on the 14th of June, rather than the 15th of June, 1945.

Fred W. Summers Sr.

CHARLO - Fred William Summers Sr., 85, of Charlo, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2000, of natural causes at the St. Luke Extended Care Facility in Ronan.

Fred was born Aug. 20, 1914, in Poplar to Arthur Bronson and Louise Schmitz Summers.

He was discharged from the U.S. Army on May 31, 1964, as a master sergeant after a 27-year career plus six years with the Montana National Guard. He served during World War II and Korea.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Lilian, on Aug. 16, 1995. He is survived by five children, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private funeral services have taken place. Shrider's Mortuary of Ronan is assisting the family with cremation and arrangements.
