Uehlinger is in the Daily Inter Lake, Kalispell, MT, 23 Feb 1945 JOHN E. UEHLINGER Funeral services for John E. Uehlinger were held Friday morning at the Waggener and Campbell chapel with Rev. Wallace Bristol of Christ Episcopal Church officiating. Friends filled the chapel where the services were held. Members of the Elks lodge, of which Mr. Uehlinger was a life member, and the Kalispell Fire Dept. attended the services in a body. OBITUARY Mr. Uehlinger was born in New York City in 1875, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Uehlinger, and came to Montana at age 15, his parents permitting him to visit a schoolmate, Andrew Grosswiler, who was living in the Tobacco Plains country near Eureka. When the time came for him to return to New York, he had become so enamored of the west that he decided to stay, despite the objections of his family, and began to ride for the Circle J outfit, a horse ranch in the Tobacco Plains country, and for four years his lot was cast with the cow-punchers and horse wranglers of that section. On numerous occasions there were raids by bands of Indians and cattle rustlers and once he was a member of a posse that followed horse thieves for several hundred miles in western Canada although he was but a lad in his teens at the time. He had many interesting experiences and at one time rode from Stryker to Demersville for medical aid for a man who had been injured, and returned the same day. It was in winter, and the only road was an Indian trail, but he made the trip in record time. The panic of 1893 changed the plans of the "Kootenai Kid", as he was known in the Tobacco Plains country. The livestock business was hard hit and no longer afforded employment and in 1894 he came to Kalispell where he has since made his home. He has always taken a keen interest in civic affairs and never failed to take part in any movement of his hometown. He was a charter member of the Kalispell Volunteer Fire Department, and for 20 years acted as fire chief. He was a strong believer in fire prevention, and personally made the rounds of business houses, suggesting methods of reducing fire hazards. He frequently addressed schools, service clubs and other organizations. During his term as fire chief, fire losses in Kalispell were very low. Mr. Uehlinger has been a member of the Kalispell lodge of Elks for many years and served as Exalted Ruler in 1921 and 1922. He was also a trustee of the order for several terms. On June 9, 1897, Mr. Uehlinger was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Kirk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kirk, pioneer residents, and to them three children were born--Capt. A.E. Uehlinger of the United States Navy, now stationed at Bremerton Navy Yard; Mrs. Mildred Ross, wife of a mining engineer in Chile, South America; and Mrs. Victor Guest of Kalispell, all of whom survive him. Mr. Uehlinger was one of the colorful characters of Kalispell. He made a multitude of friends during his long residence here, all of whom held him in the highest regard, and greatly regret his passing.
