Looking for an obituary for my great uncle who grew up in Anaconda.

He was named after a Methodist Priest (whose region was Montana). As a child he was nicknamed 'Moony" after a cartoon character.

Merril married Verna Nathan on September 22, 1918 in Portland Oregon.

Merril became a Methodist minister for the Foursquare Gospel Church and later served as a missionary with his wife in the Belgium Congo. He also served as a diplomat (or liaison) for France and Belgium to help keep the natives from uprising and killing the soldiers.

Dear Mrs. Sigler:

Verna has requested I write a letter to you.

Recently Verna wrote to the steamship company asking about the Atha (Atho, Atla or Atlo?), the ship Merrill was coming on.

She sent Rev. Correll's name to the company for reference. To-day Rev. Billie Black (Blaeh?) came out to see her. He had a letter from Rev. Correll and the steamship company saying this ship had been torpedoed April 23.

It was just 200 miles off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia. There were thirteen survivers of the ship; there were some picked up a month later near Halifax, Canada.

The steamship company telegraphed Mataidi, Africa (Port of Congo) where he embarked to verify it and the answer came back that he was on the ship...

Any info would be appreciated!

Chris Sigler
