I am seeking to locate males age 6 or older who have either a direct, blood-related ancestor who served in the Union forces of the Civil War or who have the brother of a direct ancestor who similarly served. The goal is to assist in the formation on a local "camp" of of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, which was formed in 1881 as a male auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) The G.A.R. was the largest Union veterans' organization after the Civil War. It was chartered by the Congress of the United States in 1954. There is already one member in Miles City at this time.
The purposes of the organization are: (1)to educate the members and the public to the service and sacrifices of the Union soldier & sailor (2) to preserve Civil War battle- fields, monuments, artifacts, and history in relation to Union forces of the Civil War (3) to mark and catalogue graves of Union soldiers and sailors (4) to commemorate Memorial Day as originally set aside by the G.A.R. to honor Union soldiers and sailors (5) to promote patriotism and respect for the U.S. flag and (6) to honor living veterans of all wars.
See the national website at: http://suvcw.org
I would be glad to send more information.
