I have information on E.C. Russell born Feb 7 1862 in Harrisonville Ohio to Francis C. Russell. E.C. was a neighbor of my greatgrandfather Tom Yates in Carbon County MT in the early the 1900's. Frances C Russell was born in 1831 in New Hampshire he served in the 13th Ohio Infantry in the Civil War until the summer of 1863 when he transferred to the 5th Ohio Cavalry, with rank of Captain. He later served as a Major in the 13th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He later studied law and was in partnership with his brother, Daniel A Russell in Meigs County Ohio. Francis was later appointed a Judge and served several terms in the Ohio legislature.
The Russell family were immigrants to Massachusetts from England in colonial times.
Mary Martin Russell was the mother of E.C. Russell and was born near Charleston Virginia. She was of Irish descent.
E.C. came to Montana in 1881 and settled first in the Gallatin Valley and then came to the Yellowstone Valley in Feb 1882. He worked first for Nelson Story as a cowboy for 6 years and then later for 1 year for the Seven R outfit as a range rider. He then moved to Red Lodge and opened a livery business and was a stock inspector for 1 year. He settled near Luther in 1893 when the land was first opened for homesteading. He was appointed a forest supervisor in 1903. E.C. married Mary Murray in 1889, she was born in Melrose Mass and came to Montana as a child of 12 with her parents Michael and Sabina (McKeown) Murray. EC and Mary had 7 children in 1907 when they gave the above information for inclusion in the book "History of the Yellowstone Valley Montana" publ 1907 by Western Historical Pub Co Spokane Wash. Children were, Mary, Lewis, Leila, Charles, Francis, Edna and Theodore. E,C. was a staunch Republican. I hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion on this family.
