Tishomingo – James Edward “Jim” Burns, 71, died June 23, 2009, at his home. He graduated from Tishomingo High School and obtained his bachelor and master degrees in science from the University of Mississippi. He was a lifelong and active member of Tishomingo Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, as a Sunday School teacher and in many other administrative positions. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He began a career in public education in Andalusia High School in Andalusia, Ala., and later taught science at Iuka High School, Tishomingo High School and Alcorn Central High School during a 35-year career in education. He also worked for Reynolds Aluminum and World Color in environmental protection.

He was devoted to the Town of Tishomingo and its citizens. He had served 32 years as an alderman and would have been sworn in for another term on July 7. He was also a longtime volunteer fireman who used his own funds to purchase tools to repair fire hydrants in the early years of the town’s fire hydrant system. He also was a dedicated volunteer for the Tishomingo County Red Cross. He owned and operated the Tishomingo Car Wash for many years. In addition to his volunteer activities, he was an avid photographer and he established and maintained a photo lab to teach students at Tishomingo High School how to take and develop photos. The first computer he owned, he built, and he continued to take a great interest in the advances of technology and science and shared that experience with his students. He loved water sports and taught many young people to waterski. He was always a children’s advocate and over the years anonymously helped many area young people in need.

A memorial service was held June 26 at Tishomingo Methodist Church. Deaton Funeral Home of Belmont was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors included cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fay and Eva Finch Burns, and a sister, Janette.
