The first thing I want to ask you is when you were born?

"I was born December 24, 1904. I was born just over the line in Itawamba County, just the other side of Bull Mountain Creek bridge. When I was three years old, we moved from there to a place that my daddy bought here in Monroe County, just about three miles east of Smithville.

I used to come down nearly to Smithville, to see my Aunt, and spend the night. We walked, of course-my sister and I. We would come down on Saturday night, stay all night and go back home Sunday afternoon. My sister was older than I was. Her name was Mary Jane Maxey. She married Harvey Sanders. She was his second wife. He had first married Tennie Mattison. You know Mrs Lou Anna Paine of Amory? She was Mr Sanders' daughter by his first wife.

There were two brothers between Mary Jane and me. I was raised by a stepmother. My step-mother's name was Scilla Jordan. My mother died when I was two years old. Her name was Samantha Duncan. She is buried at Maxey Cemetery, not Siloam, but the big one-Maxey Cemetery."

What was your father's name?

"George Wesley Maxey was my father. He was born in 1857 and died in 1934. He is buried at Maxey Cemetery. My grandparents gave that cemetery for people to bury their folks there-anybody who wanted to. My grandparents were Benjamin Maxey who was born in 1818 and died in 1886 and Martha Ann West Maxey, who was born in 1824 and died in 1902. Now, they are buried at Siloam.

My father said he grew up around Turon. My mother and father lived at Turon. Then Daddy bought the place three miles from Smithville. He and my step-mother had several children. I am the only one still living from my mother's set of children. Daddy had three different sets of children. My father married four times. The first wife was Mary A Lindsey. They called her Molly. She had several children. I can't remember all of their names right now. I know that Effie and Polly were two of them. The second wife only lived thirteen months after they were married. She didn't have any children. Her name was Mattie, I think. Then there was my mother, Samantha J Duncan. She had six children. The fourth wife, Scilla Jordan had eight children.

My mother's children were Alvin, who married Flora Brown first and Maude Stephens second; Mary Jane, who married Harvey Sanders; Wilford who died at the age of twenty-five (he had the big measles and then got pneumonia);Henry who married Beulah; Minnie (that's me) who married Coy Cleveland Suggs: and Melvin who married Martha Pickle."
