"James and Elizabeth Gilmore (both born before 1775, perhaps in Georgia) moved to Monroe County Mississippi before the 1820 census. They established a homestead of 80 acres in the northeast corner of Monroe County, about one mile south of the Bethlehem Baptist Church. They had one son, Elijah, and five daughters.

James Gilmore's last will and testament was admitted to Probate on November 2 1846. Elijah Gilmore was teh executor. James'' estate was left to his wife. His negor slave, named Hutson, was to be set free. However, if the slave did nt choose to be free, he became the property of Burrell Gilmore, who was the grandson of James Gilmore. He also left financing for the education of Burrell.

James' only son, Elijah, was born about 1800 perhaps in Georgia. His wife, Lucretia, was born about 1810, also perhaps in Georgia. Lucretia was the first cousin of Elijah. Her father was Solomon Gilmore brother to James. Elijah Gilmore was a justice of tghe peace. He performed a double wedding ceemony for two of his sons. He purchased land in southeast Itawamba County, which he lated sold to Edmund Cody (registered September 1, 1847). He moved back to the family homestead which he inherited. Elijah and Lucretia Gilmore conveyed the homestead to Wesley (their son) Gilmore in October 1847.

Elijah died before 1850. It is thought that he and his parents are buried in an unnamed, unmarked cemetery near the old family homestead. Julian and Wesley Gilmore have Confederate markers on their graves. (This cemetary did exist a few years ago as I was there. The forest had almost taken it and I just hope that the loggers have respected it and left it alone. There were several headstones still there so I know they could have seen them.)

Lucretia moved her family back to Itawamba County before the 1850 census. In addition to Burrell, William, Wesley and Julian, the 1850 census shows their issue as Stephen, Jane, Thomas, Anna, Delson, Mary, James and Susan. Lucretia is probably buried in the Gilmore-Evans Cemetary.

Thomas Gilmore born 1834 son of Elijah, married Nancy J Robinson born 1832 daughter of Mathew Robinson on January 25 1855 in Itawamba County. He was a farmer in the Asbury community. He is buried in the Gilmore Evans Cemetery. Their issue were Faeth, James, Henry, Martha, Solomon, Doll, Susan, Dealer.

James Gilmore born 1859 son of Thomas and Nancy Gilmore married Mary Jane Wigginton born 1865 daughter of George and Frances Wigginton in 1886. They were farmers in the James Creek community. Their issue, Trulove (moved to Texas), Jetta married Joe Brown, Nancy E married Geroge Pirce, Thomas C married Lela Bennett, Ella G married Dallas Bennett, Della married Gordon Phillips, George E married Avie ?, James and Mary Gilmore are buried in Mt Moriah Cemetery.

Nancy Etta Gilmore born 1892 daughter of James and Mary Gilmore married George Pierce born 1891 son of Mathew and Mary Pierce on January 10, 1909 in Detroit AL. Their issue M Jessmer died 1910, Leskar married Orbie Millican, James M died 1913, Bertho O married C Summerford, Della M married C Cody, Audie W married V Pillizzi, Mary A married H Smith, Albert A married M L Morgan, William A married M Cantrell, and Covella D married P Mackay. They lived in the Turon community until 1950 when they moved to Wisconsin. Nancy died there in 1978 and is buried in the Liberty Grove Cemetery in Itawamba County."
