Brooks Varner Monaghan, Sr., 60, died August 17, 1973 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis after an illness of several weeks. He was a native of Monroe County and attended school in Amory. He also attended Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson. He married Annie Mae Conwill in 1938. They had lived in Memphis for 27 years. He was an employee of the Memphis Commercial Appeal for 27 years where he was a linotype operator. He worked several times in Fulton while employed by Theron Harden in Amory. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was Southern Vice-President of National Fraternal Society for the Deaf. Services were August 20 from Pickle Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Providence Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, other survivors included three sons, William G. Monaghan and Dr. Brooks Varner Monaghan, Jr., and Orloff "Sonny" Monaghan, all of Memphis; five brothers, Orloff Monaghan of Baton Rouge, La., Ted Monaghan of Haggerman, Idaho, Bilbo Monaghan of Knoxville, Tenn., Joe Monaghan of Jackson, Miss., and P. K. Monaghan of Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren.
