A Tupelo woman is dead and her husband is in critical condition as the result of an apparent murder-suicide attempt on March 22, 1973. The dead woman was identified as Mrs. Afton B. Carter, who was killed instantly with multiple gunshot wounds. Funeral services were held at the Second Baptist Church with burial in the Carolina Cemetery. The 46-year old Mrs. Carter was a native of Monroe County and was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Tupelo.
Survivors included her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Bobby Carr of Shannon; a step-daughter, Mrs. Sandra McNeely of Tupelo; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Grace of Memphis, Mrs. Una Newton and Mrs. Grace Devall, both of Amory, and Mrs. Dorothy Pennington of Tupelo; three brothers, Aqulia Sloan of Amory, Johnny Sloan of Columbus and Shirley Sloan of Tupelo; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
