I have MELTON ancestors in Coffeeville and surrounding area.Of course I don't know about an Alice. When was Alice born? (Just approximately if you don't know exactly). Following is the information that I do have:

John MELTON and Mary (Polly)MCCRANEY
John was a minister, and came to Mississippi from Alabama.

John MELTON
Born: August 1806
Married: 12 January 1832
Place: St. Clair Co., AL
Died: 1854
Other: Marriage License--license to perform ceremonies as ordained minister--10 February 1848, St. Clair Co., AL CH

Mary (Polly) MCCRANEY
Born: June 1800
Died: January 1868

Mary's sister Sarah (Sally) MCCRANEY came to Mississippi from Alabama as well, so it is not at all unlikely that other Meltons related to John may have done the same.

John's parents were Thomas MELTON and Sarah GUNNING.
John's grandfather was Isham MELTON.

John MELTON and Mary (Polly)McCRANEY had the following children:

1) George W. MELTON
Born: 29 December 1832
Died: 1862

2) W.J. MELTON
Born: 8 January 1835
Died: 1911

3) J.J. (Jack) MELTON
Born: 17 May 1836
Died: 1912
Place: MS

4) Sarah A. MELTON
Born: 9 October 1838

5) Amanda C. MELTON
Born: 23 October 1840

6) M.N. MELTON
Born: 8 June 1842
Died: 1862

7) Isham MELTON
Born: 7 October 1943

I think M.N. Melton may haved died in the war. Isham perhaps as well. J.J. was my gg grandfather, and did not fight in the war to my knowledge. His wife Mary Louise Sheffield died young and left a lot of young children. George W. Melton died in 1862 but for some reason I don't think he died in the war. I could be wrong. I have a day book that he kept in 1857 with lists of accounts, a verse or two and some information about his grandparents. As of 1857 he was not married. At any rate, J.J. and W.J. are the only Melton sons that seem to have lived long enough to have families. I don't know who W.J.'s family are.

J.J.(Jack) MELTON and Mary Louise SHEFFIELD had the following children:

1) Adolphus Robert MELTON
Born: 9 February 1868
Died: 4 January 1927

2) Malcolm Pinkney MELTON
Born: 29 October 1869
Died: 24 January 1937

3) Mary Louise MELTON
Born: 31 May 1871
Died: 10 October 1873

4) Annie Icey MELTON
Born: 2 March 1873
Died: 30 June 1899

5) William Edgar MELTON
Born: 12 February 1875
Died: 1948

6) Susie Tilden MELTON
Born: 6 November 1876
Died: 12 June 1952

7) Charles Jackson MELTON
Born: 7 September 1878
Died: 8 May 1958

8) Eudora Octavia MELTON
Born: 10 May 1870
Died: 17 June 1965

9) George Earnest MELTON
Born: 2 March 1882
Died: 27 May 1953

My grandmother was raised in Yalobusha County Mississippi on land that I believe belonged to the Melton family. Her mother was Eudora Octavia Melton (daughter of the above named J.J. Melton).

I have a bit more information on the McCraneys and Sheffields if anyone needs that.
