I have MELTON ancestors in Coffeeville and surrounding area.Of course I don't know about an Alice. When was Alice born? (Just approximately if you don't know exactly). Following is the information that I do have:
John MELTON and Mary (Polly)MCCRANEY
Mary (Polly) MCCRANEY
Mary's sister Sarah (Sally) MCCRANEY came to Mississippi from Alabama as well, so it is not at all unlikely that other Meltons related to John may have done the same.
John's parents were Thomas MELTON and Sarah GUNNING.
John MELTON and Mary (Polly)McCRANEY had the following children:
1) George W. MELTON
2) W.J. MELTON
3) J.J. (Jack) MELTON
4) Sarah A. MELTON
5) Amanda C. MELTON
6) M.N. MELTON
7) Isham MELTON
I think M.N. Melton may haved died in the war. Isham perhaps as well. J.J. was my gg grandfather, and did not fight in the war to my knowledge. His wife Mary Louise Sheffield died young and left a lot of young children. George W. Melton died in 1862 but for some reason I don't think he died in the war. I could be wrong. I have a day book that he kept in 1857 with lists of accounts, a verse or two and some information about his grandparents. As of 1857 he was not married. At any rate, J.J. and W.J. are the only Melton sons that seem to have lived long enough to have families. I don't know who W.J.'s family are.
J.J.(Jack) MELTON and Mary Louise SHEFFIELD had the following children:
2) Malcolm Pinkney MELTON
3) Mary Louise MELTON
4) Annie Icey MELTON
5) William Edgar MELTON
6) Susie Tilden MELTON
7) Charles Jackson MELTON
8) Eudora Octavia MELTON
9) George Earnest MELTON
My grandmother was raised in Yalobusha County Mississippi on land that I believe belonged to the Melton family. Her mother was Eudora Octavia Melton (daughter of the above named J.J. Melton).
I have a bit more information on the McCraneys and Sheffields if anyone needs that.
