Medical training in Mississippi prior to the Civil War

Does anyone know if there was a place for medical doctor training in MS before the Civil War? I have a relative who joined the CSA in 1861 as an Asst. Surgeon. He appears to have lived in Fulton, MS at that time but I can't find out where he got his medical training.
